The Ins and Outs of Hamstring Tendonitis

Have you ever felt a searing pain in the knee after a long, tiring run or workout? If yes, chances are you had hamstring tendonitis. They are the soft tissues connecting the hamstring muscles and other tendons to the outer ring of the knee. Hamstring tendinitis is a condition that arises when this muscle gets damaged or torn when there’s excessive force or strain exerted on it.

One of the main causes of hamstring tendonitis is overuse of the knee muscles, particularly when a person does extreme running and other jumping sports activity. Football players are also known to suffer from this muscle damage because they rapidly change their speed and put the tendons under high stress. Individuals who are new to bodybuilding and other sports are also at risk of sudden stretch of muscles, which in turn will lead to hamstring tendonitis.


Although, it occurs mainly because of overuse of muscles, it can also occur in some other cases where the tendons are overstretched during warm up exercises or sudden fall. If a person doesn’t do enough warming up, they might end up over straining their tendons while involving in some sports activities, like kicking, jumping, running, and more.

The reason for this is when the damaged tendon is subjected to more pressure it will get inflamed and swollen. Sometimes, the condition might turn very severe resulting in excessive pain in calf and thigh muscles as well.

If hamstring tendonitis is caused by rapid force to the muscle or any other sudden pull to the muscle, the pain will usually arise only at the point of injury. Some patients might even feel cramps and stiffness in their muscles, if the condition is left untreated for a long time. In case if you are feeling any pain in your knee muscles and if the pain resurfaces everytime you get involved in some physical activity, it’s better to get it check immediately.

How to treat this condition?

Treatment of hamstring tendonitis requires adequate rest, so that the tendons get enough time to heal. Avoiding any stressful physical activity will also help reduce further damage to the tendons, thereby speeding up the recovery. Whenever you feel any pain in the tendons apply some ice on the inner muscles surrounding the knee, it will reduce any inflammation or swelling in the muscle and provides a cooling relief to the pain.

Anti-inflammatory medications suggested by any sports physician will also help in healing the inflamed muscles. Sometimes physicians might suggest strapping and taping techniques for stabilizing the tendons and relieving the pressure surrounding the knee. When the injury starts healing you would need a physiotherapist to guide you through a rehabilitation program.

Sometimes steroid injections are also used for faster healing of hamstring tendonitis. Whatever be the healing methods make sure you get enough rest and get back to your sports activity, safe and sound.
